Equipment Sale

Many years ago, K4YNY donated to the ACARC a complete 440MHz repeater system, including a 50/144/220 MHz linking system. Available information indicates that the system had never been placed in full operation before the donation, and held in storage for almost a decade afterwards. At the October 2009 Club meeting, the members voted to sell off the equipment, with the prevailing sentiment that the condition of the equipment was unknown at the time, effort and probable expense to place the equipment in operation might be prohibitive, and, given the pattern of decline in repeater usage in the area, to include both the Club’s own 2 Meter repeater and those operated by WVHFA, those expenditures were not justified. Further, with the recent replacement of the Club’s 2 Meter transmitter and receiver, this old equipment also became available for sale.

All equipment was offered for sale on e-bay. The 2 Meter amplifier and the 50/144/220 MHz linking system, after e-bay account expenses, yielded $417.00 from the buyers. Packaging and shipping/insurance costs incurred by the sellers were $60.00. No serious offers were received for the remaining equipment. There were inquiries, but despite assurances that any reasonable offer would most probably be favorably considered, no offers of cash were forthcoming. The remaining equipment was taken to the Raleigh Hamfest on April 10th, where one offer of $75.00 for the lot, cash in hand, —“…bird in the hand as opposed to two in the bush…” was accepted.

When the Club replaced its 2 Meter transmitter and receiver, it also reactivated its long dormant 442.500 repeater system. However, the combination of the old controller and the “new” 2M & 440MHz radios required that the two systems be linked through the controller—i.e. neither band can be accessed independently. Separation of access to the two repeaters requires a separate controller. At the March Club meeting, the membership voted to purchase a second controller. The new controller has been purchased, received, and as this document is prepared (4/16—2:00pm), we are attempting to coordinate instillation.

Here are the numbers.
